Guergana Petrova is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M University, College Station, where her research is supported in part by the National Science Foundation Applied Mathematics Program. She was also the recipient of the Fellowship for the New Investigators Twinning Program, administered by the National Research Council. Prior to joining Texas A&M, she was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she received a Horace H. Rackham Faculty Fellowship.
She received her M.S. with honors in Mathematics in 1993 from Sofia University, Bulgaria, and her Ph.D. in Mathematics under the direction of Ronald DeVore in 1999 from the University of South Carolina.

Her primary research interests are in numerical analysis, hyperbolic partial differential equations and nonlinear approximation. Part of this research has contributed to the development of new anisotropic smoothness spaces based on level sets. These spaces can be used to determine the compressiblity of terrain maps.
