Stanley Osher is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Director of Special Projects, Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics. His research interests include level set methods for computing moving fronts involving topological changes, the development of methods for approximating hyperbolic conservation laws and Hamilton-Jacobi equations and total variation and other partial differential equations based image processing techniques and in scientific computing and applied partial differential equations. In the past forty years, he has made very important contributions to the development of these areas through his scientific research, education and community service.

Stanley received his postgraduate education from New York University and spent three decades in UCLA. He serves on editorial boards of many international journals, organizes and co-organizes many major conferences, and has given numerous invited lectures all over the world.
