Computational and Data-enabled Science and Engineering for Complex Multiphysics Systems

Abstract

Computational and data-enabled science and engineering (CDS&E), an intersection across multidisciplinary fields, including applied mathematics, computer science, core science and engineering disciplines, has demonstrated vast values in tackling enormous complexities in multiphysics and multiscale engineering systems, including aerospace, energy management, additive manufacturing, and biomedicine.

In this seminar, the significance and needs for CDS&E to combating real-world multiphysics problems will be identified first. Then main thrust areas and projects of CDS&E research undertaken in my group will be presented, including equation-based and data-driven reduced order modeling, large-scale and/or real-time data analytics and management, and microfluidics lab-on-chip system engineering/experimentation. Our efforts have convincingly demonstrated the tremendous potential of CDS&E in system performance assessment, real-time simulation/prediction, design and optimization, control synthesis, and feature detection, aiming to achieve salient performance and cost-effectiveness with fast turnaround for complex engineering systems. Specifically, the equation-based model order reduction and data-driven surrogate modeling for fast and accurate multiphysics analysis that has recently gained significant traction from the federal agencies will be further elucidated. Its salient computing performance, i.e., orders of magnitude of speed up with minor errors in contrast to the existing high-fidelity methods will be demonstrated through relevant case studies of NASA and MDA interest. The seminar will be concluded with a summary and a brief discussion about the future research of CDS&E with significant opportunities for real-world engineering and “engineering intelligence”.
