Jozsef Balogh

Jozsef Balogh grew up in a small Hungarian town, Morahalom, which is famous for its thermal baths. He attended a special math school, Sagvari Endre high school in Szeged, and was a two-time silver medal winner at the International Mathematics Olympiads. After receiving an MS degree in Mathematics at Szeged University, he earned his PhD degree at the University of Memphis, under the supervision of Béla Bollobás. Since then, Balogh has held visiting positions at the AT&T Research Labs, IAS Princeton, the Ohio State University, IPAM, Szeged University, and was faculty at UCSD. He is currently a professor at UIUC.

Balogh's main interests are extremal and probabilistic combinatorics and bootstrap percolation. His recent research interests focus on sparse discrete structures. Balogh was an adviser of 5 graduate students, among them Samotij was the EUROCOMB 2013 and Dénes König prize 2014 winner. Balogh's research has been partially supported by NSF since 2003. He was a recipient of an NSF CAREER grant, and was a Simons and Marie Curie Fellow.

Balogh likes to bowl, play chess, racquetball, soccer, and tennis, and his main hobby is being the soccer coach of the Wildcats team. Fun fact: Balogh is the 3rd most frequent coauthor of Bollobás (tied with Imre Leader).


On the applications of counting independent sets in hypergraphs

Recently, Balogh-Morris-Samotij and Saxton-Thomason developed a method of counting independent sets in hypergraphs. I will survey the field, and explain several applications. This includes counting maximal triangle-free graphs, maximal sum-free sets, intersecting families of permutations, intersecting families set-systems, estimate volume of metric spaces, etc.

These results are partly joint with Das, Delcourt, Liu, Morris, Mycroft, Petrickova, Samotij, Sharifzadeh, Treglown and Wagner.
