Laurent Demanet of MIT will present the Fall 2010 Distinguished Lecture

The Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute is honored to present Laurent Demanet of MIT, Cambridge, MA, as the Fall 2010 Distinguished Lecturer. Demanet will give a talk on "Matrix probing: fitting matrices from applications to random vectors," on December 15th from 3:30 - 4:30 PM in LeConte 412. Laurent Demanet is assistant professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at MIT. He is also a member of MIT's Earth Resources Laboratory. Previously, he held a postdoctoral position called "Szego assistant professor" in the Department of Mathematics at Stanford. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2006 under Emmanuel Candes, in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Caltech. He completed his undergraduate studies in mathematical engineering and theoretical physics at Universite de Louvain, Belgium. Broadly speaking, his research interests include applied analysis and scientific computing, with an eye on inverse problems that involve waves.

Linyuan Lu and Joshua Coooper are awarded a National Science Foundation grant

Linyuan Lu (PI) and Joshua Cooper (Co-PI) are awarded a three year National Science Foundation grant totaling $87,999 for their research on: Collaborative Research: STEM Real World Applications of Mathematics.

"We seek to address the demand for additional concrete real world applications of mathematics in undergraduate curricula nationwide. Building upon the successful NSFCCLI Phase 1 Grant, STEM Real World Applications Modules, this next project will develop a second wave of new modules that closely tie classroom concepts with mathematics used in industry. This research is led by the PI of the Phase 1 project, Darren Narayan, and includes mathematics and computer science faculty that have previously worked in industry. These include: Ronald Graham (AT&T); David Ross (Eastman Kodak); and Joy Lind (US West, Qwest, Level 3 Communications, and Avaya). Others have solved problems posed for industry, Joshua Cooper (DTAI, Inc (now Sys Technologies)) and Darren Narayan (Microsoft Research). The team also includes Fan Chung Graham and Linyuan Lu known for their book Complex Graphs and Networks. Fan Chung Graham also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Internet Mathematics. Michael Dorff will bring experience from the BYU/MAA, “When Will I Use Math?”. Joan Lucas and Rebecca Smith bring expertise from graph theory with potential applications to the matching of kidney donors and recipients. The overarching goal of this team is to show undergraduate and high school students that strong mathematical skills will lead to more employment options and a greater chance of success."

Xinfeng Liu is awarded a National Science Foundation grant

Xinfeng Liu (IMI) is awarded a three year National Science Foundation grant totaling $125,445 for his research on: Mathematical Modeling and Computational Studies for Cell Signaling.

"Cells make complex response decisions using networks of intracellular signaling proteins to detect and process environmental stimuli. Given a great variety of similar signaling proteins existed in a given cell, a core question in cell biology is how such signals are accurately and specifically transmitted through pathways. In many cases, scaffold proteins that bind and organize multiple proteins into complexes within a pathway have merged as essential factors in shaping the quantitative response behavior of a pathway. This research is on the study of mathematical models and its related computation to explore various functions of scaffold proteins within a pathway. The theme of this work is on the development of mathematical models for signaling pathways, and design and implementation of fast numerical solvers to solve such models."

Xiaofeng Yang receives a subaward from UNC Chapel Hill

Xiaofeng Yang (IMI) is granted a two year subaward from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill totaling $60,521 for his research on: Thermal Control of Flow-Processing in Rigid-Rod Nano-Composites. Funding for this project comes from the US Army/DOD.

"We propose to study the effects of time-dependent, spatially distributed, thermal gradients on shear processing of nematic rigid-rod nano-composites through model and algorithmic extensions, followed by post-processing material characterization. Since the coupling of temperature and flow in a confined geometry has not been carried out previously for nano-rod dispersions, our first goal is to simulate the effects of thermal processing degrees of freedom on the flow, stress, and orientational distribution, followed by assessment of modified composite properties. Specifically, we will assess the effects of thermal controls on the principal values of effective property tensors, and on critical issues that plague high-aspect-ratio nano-rod and nano-platelet composites: heterogeneity, defects, and extreme variability in properties. Based on these studies, the second goal is to develop design rules for thermal shear processing of films. Our group has only recently gained a detailed understanding of "tensorial defects" in heterogeneous film flows. The role of these defect domains in bulk performance properties is not yet known; the coupling of shear-induced defects to thermal controls is a completely new investigation. Through these projects, we will assess the generic issue of property modifications due to thermal quench and annealing protocols for rigid-rod nano-composites."

László Székely and Linyuan Lu are awarded a National Science Foundation grant

László Székely (PI) and Linyuan Lu (Co-PI) are awarded a three year National Science Foundation grant totaling $175,930 for their research on: Extremal and probabilistic combinatorics II.

"Scientific breakthroughs, such as the sequencing and analysis of genomes, the development of the internet, the emergence of computers as conjecturers and verifiers of theorems, have spurred the development of new theory and algorithms for discrete structures. There is increasing demand to understand “optimal” extreme structures and “typical” random structures in discrete mathematics. This project will investigate basic combinatorial questions about structures and will look for various applications of discrete mathematics in computer science, biology, and engineering."

Sixth Vasil A. Popov Prize awarded

The Sixth Vasil Popov Prize was awarded on March 8, 2010 to Joel A. Tropp, California Institute of Technology, during the Thirteenth International Conference on Approximation Theory held in San Antonio, Texas. This prize honors the memory of the Bulgarian analyst Vasil A. Popov (1942-1990), best known for his contributions to Approximation theory. 3rd Annual International Seminar Series starts March 1st

Under the leadership of Wolfgang Dahmen, RWTH Aachen, Germany, the IMI and the Nanocenter are jointly hosting additional lectures in its International Seminar Series 2010: "Imaging in Electron Microscopy II" from March 1-31, 2010. This follows the highly successful workshop held in February and International Seminar Series held in Spring 2009 ("Imaging in Electron Microscopy").

Imaging in Electron Microscopy II workshop starts February 18th

The IMI and the NanoCenter are jointly hosting a research workshop in Spring 2010 to identify current obstacles and problems in the field of imaging in electron microscopy that have the potential to be resolved by emerging mathematical methods. This intensive workshop, moderated by Wolfgang Dahmen, is scheduled for February 18 - 23, 2010 and will bring together experts in electron microscopy, image science, materials science, computational science, and mathematics.
